There’s a quiet, undeniable power to the central idea behind Loving, the new film from writer and director Jeff Nichols (Shotgun Stories, Mud) . The film tells the true story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred (Ruth Negga), an interracial couple living in 1950s Virginia who fought all the way to the Supreme Court to defend their marriage, which was illegal under state anti-miscegenation statutes.

It’s kind of amazing, in a truly terrible way, that such laws were on the books in living memory, and Nichols is certainly a canny and careful enough filmmaker to let that reality speak for itself without overegging the pudding. It certainly helps when you’ve got performers of Edgerton and Negga’s skill front and centre (Negga earned an Oscar nomination for her trouble), plus Marton Csokas, Nick Kroll, and Nichols regular Michael Shannon in support.

Pack extra tissues for this one, we reckon. Loving is in cinemas from March 16.
