Damien Chazelle certainly has the music in him. After wowing the world with the electrifying Whiplash, his follow up as director is La La Land, a simply gorgeous-looking Los Angeles-set musical which sees Ryan Gosling’s jazz musician and Emma Stone’s aspiring actress get tragically romantic (or romantically tragic – dealer’s choice) in the beautiful and merciless world of showbiz.

Or, as the official synopsis puts it:

“Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Damien Chazelle, La La Land tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.”

But really, does story even matter when your colour palette is that freaking amazing? La La Land soft-shoes into Australian cinemas on December 26, 2016.
