Damien Chazelle’s lush Hollywood musical, La La Land, has picked up an impressive 14 nominations at the 89th Academy Awards. That ties it with Titanic and All About Eve for the most nominations in the history of the Awards.
But perhaps the biggest surprise was the nomination of the Vanuatu-shot Tanna, netting Australia its first ever Best Foreign Language nomination. Other Australian nominees include Lion and Hacksaw Ridge, both competing for Best Picture, while Nicole Kidman is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
Moonlight and Arrival both received eight nominations each, tying for equal second. Moonlight director, Barry Jenkins, is one of a number of African-American nominees this year, including Mahershala Ali, Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, and Octavia Spencer, a dramatic reversal of last year’s #OscarSoWhite controversy.
