The WA-made thriller Hounds of Love was best of breed at this year’s Australian Film Critics Association, beating out Ali’s Wedding, Berlin Syndrome Don’t Tell, and Lion for Best Feature.
Other winners announced last night at the Overlook at Melbourne’s Astor Theatre include:
Best Director: Garth Davis – Lion
Best Actor: Dev Patel – Lion
Best Actress: Emma Booth – Hounds Of Love
Best Supporting Actor: Jack Thompson – Don’t Tell
Best Supporting Actress: Nicole Kidman – Lion
Best Screenplay: Luke Davies – Lion
Best Cinematography: Stefan Duscio – Jungle
Best International Film (Foreign Language): Toni Erdmann
Best International Film (English Language): Moonlight
Best Documentary: I Am Not Your Negro
And three awards for excellence in film writing:
Ivan Hutchinson Award for best long-form writing on Australian or International cinema
Adrian Martin for “Dog Day, Every Day: Gillian Leahy’s Baxter and Me and the Essay Film” in Metro (Australia), no. 192 (May 2017)
Award for Best Review of an Individual Australian Film
Luke Buckmaster for his review of Ellipsis in The Guardian
