Working in conjunction with the Brisbane Festival, Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art is presenting a retrospective of three masters of Italian horror: Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava, and Dario Argento. Expect plenty of stylised gore, expressionistic compositions, and (from Argento at least) a shedload of Goblin on the soundtrack.
Expect Goblin themselves, in fact. The band will be on hand to provide a live score for Argento’s immortal (and soon to be remade) Suspiria on September 22, just one of the many highlights of the program, which runs from September 8 – October 1, 2017.
The films run the gamut from Bava’s brilliant black and white 1960 game-changer Black Sunday (a Tim Burton fave), through to Argento’s 1987 Opera, taking in a staggering number of films in between, including The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin, Zombie Flesh Eaters (aka Zombi 2, aka the one where a zombie fights a shark), Deep Red, Tenebre, and many more. Many of the 35mm prints have been generously loaned from private collections, but expect a few new 4K restorations, too.
For fans, this is unmissable. For newcomers, it’s hard to imagine a better crash course on the wonderfully weird world of Italian shock cinema. For tickets and info, hit up the official site.
