Australian actors Geoffrey Rush and Jai Courtney have joined the remake of Storm Boy that is due to start shooting in South Australia this July.
Rush will be taking on the role of the titular character, Mike Kingley, who narrates the main action as an older man, while Courtney will play the Storm Boy’s father, Hideaway Tom, a troubled hermit who lives on a desolate stretch of coast with his son, after the death of his wife and daughter.
Greg Rowe and Peter Cummins took on those roles in the original 1976 film.
Meanwhile the iconic pelican, Mr Percival, will be realised through digital means.
The new Storm Boy will be directed by Shawn Seet (Two Fists One Heart; Deep Water; The Code) from a script by Justin Monjo (The Secret Daughter, Spear).
