Poor Disney. The Mouse House as been scraping by on whatever thin financial gruel they can mill out of the ageing Star Wars and Marvel franchises, unaware that what the kids really want is the return of the cruelly truncated ’90s modern fantasy animated series, Gargoyles.

Luckily we have award-winning filmmaker Carlos Ferrer on hand to show them the light. Ferrer has created out of whole cloth (apart from the IP, obviously) a pretty neat fan film to hopefully demonstrate that he is the right man to shepherd the series into the 21st century.

And why not? Gargoyles seems to have slipped between the cracks a bit, culturally speaking, but it was a hell of a thing back in the day – a dark, complex, yet kid-friendly original property that implemented long story arcs, mature themes and nuanced characters into a show that dealt with medieval creatures battling evil in modern day New York City. Created by Greg Wiseman, the series boasted an impressive voice cast, with Keith David as lead gargoyle Goliath, Jonathan Frakes as evil nemesis Xanatos, and Marina Sirtis, Frank Welker, Ed Asner, Clancy Brown, John Rhys-Davies, David Warner and more all cropping up at one time or another.

Despite critical acclaim, the show only lasted three seasons, which is a damn shame, and it would be pretty cool to see Gargoyles live again in today’s IP-happy, franchise-hungry cultural landscape. As Ferrer says, “I need as many views as possible to convince producers and execs that my vision of a live action Gargoyles film will work for audiences and fans. It’s a rich story with a great message – a fantasy set in the real world and with today’s technology it could be fantastic. I grew up with this so I feel like I really know what has to be done. So it’s really about getting as much exposure as possible with the fans and others who may not know about the show.”

What do you guys think? Should Gargoyles rise again? And is Ferrer the person for the job? Sound off in the comments.
