Recently in Australia for the Adelaide premiere of Hotel Mumbai, the trades have announced that Dev Patel will make his directorial debut with Monkey Man, from a script by Patel, Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai, Master and Commander), developed with the assistance of S’ya Concept.

The story is set in contemporary India, and follows The Kid (Patel), who is released from prison into a world ‘enmeshed in corporate greed and eroding spiritual values.’

Producing are the team behind Hotel Mumbai, Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk, and Sydney-based Xeitgeist’s Samarth Sahni, Joe Thomas and Patel, who will no doubt be looking for a similar scenario they created behind Mumbai. Shooting is scheduled to commence in Mumbai in 2019, but that doesn’t mean interiors and post can’t be done in Australia.

Iwanyk calls it a “vibrant, thrilling and above all entertaining story.”

Chung-hoon Chung (IT, The Handmaiden, Old Boy) is on DOP duties, with 87Eleven (John Wick) also announced to choreograph and design the action sequences.

Sounds like Patel better start a strict fitness regiment sooner than later.
