The Brisbane International Film Festival is back for 2024, with the announcement of its full program…which is bursting with cinematic goodness.
“BIFF 2024 is a celebration of the power of cinema to inspire, challenge, and entertain,” says BIFF CEO Luke Wheatley. “This year’s program reflects the diversity of global storytelling, while also championing the incredible talent here in Australia. From red carpet galas to intimate documentaries, there’s something for everyone. We’re excited to bring such a dynamic and ambitious lineup to Brisbane’s audiences and look forward to sharing these powerful stories.”
Running from October 24 through to November 3, 2024, the Brisbane International Film Festival [BIFF] will play across eight cinema locations across Brisbane: Palace Barracks, Dendy Coorparoo, Dendy Portside and Dendy Outdoor, Reading Newmarket, Reading Jindalee, Five Star New Farm and the Angelika Film Centre. As always, BIFF’s program cuts across all genres, nations and breadths of filmmaking, with movies drawn from the best festivals around the world. This year, there will be new films from acclaimed and visionary filmmakers including Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton; the Palme d’Or Winning film Anora from Sean Baker starring Mikey Madison; the highly anticipated Emilia Perez from Jacques Audiard starring Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón; Nightbitch starring Amy Adams; Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night; and Brady Corbet’s historical drama The Brutalist starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce, with other highlights including Daddio (with Dakota Fanning and Sean Penn); Piece By Piece (the LEGO biopic of pop cultural phenomenon Pharell Williams); and The Piano Lesson (with Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington).
There will also be a host of Aussie films on offer, many of them making their local debuts. Major highlights include the prison drama Inside with Guy Pearce; the First Nations psychological horror flick The Moogai; the crime caper Double or Nothing with Vince Colosimo and John Jarratt; the zombie kangaroo horror comedy The Red; the indigenous animated flick The Lost Tiger; the compelling sports docos 150, Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story and Sharko, which tells the bruising story of legendary rugby league Kiwi hardman Mark Graham.
Also boasting a host of red-carpet premieres, major events and filmmaker-attended screenings, the 2024 iteration of the Brisbane International Film Festival is certain to be another winner for audiences up north. “BIFF 2024 promises to be a celebration of visionary storytelling, with a mix of emerging and seasoned talent,” says Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney. “I encourage audiences to balance their cinema diet with local Australian and Queensland-made productions that feature in this year’s festival.”
