Oh look, an Oscar nominated documentary with a $44 screen average on week 1 of release! Or, how about a Guy Pearce starring new film from a Palme d’Or winning director with a $740 screen average on 37 screens. Wasn’t Guy recently at the AACTAs promoting the film? Or better still, a Guy Sebastian starring Indian/Australian film on 42 screens at a $365 screen average. Hey, isn’t everyone seeing Bollywood films?! We’re sure that was the argument when the film was financed. Well, at least there’s a kids animation out on 174 screens at a $752 screen average atop the Australian films at the box office this weekend. Yes, that rant is snarky, but come on, what is going on with Australian films at the cinema? Everyone says that they hate Babygirl, but it’s now exceeded $3.3m at the box office. An exhibitor told us that the first half of the year at the cinemas was going to be dire. They weren’t joking! Praying for Spit to change things up next weekend! At least there’s been some promotion for that one.
