Hardly celebrated for its support of film, theatre, music, television and art (you know, all the good stuff!), the current Australian Government – through its hilarious and clumsily titled Department Of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development And Communications – is currently “seeking community and industry feedback on options to support Australian stories on our screens in a modern, multi-platform environment.” This is in response to last December’s ACCC Digital Platforms Inquiry, which identified Australian content obligations as a principal issue. The Government has now released an options paper co-authored by ACMA and Screen Australia to look at how best to support Australian stories on our screens in today’s highly diversified storytelling environment, which now includes streaming and various online services along with the traditional avenues of cinema, physical home entertainment, and television.
And now you can have your say, with submissions open to “anyone who has an interest in the media and screen sector” and due by June 12 this year.
To have your say, head to the official website.

The Cinemas must stay regardless of what the outcome of the current situation, the cinemas provide more than what streaming services can offer especially in terms of environment to watching films (in the living room with a 65 inch tv is not the same as the cinemas.
With cinemas they provide more jobs then streaming services
If the internet providers suffer outages then the streaming services such as Stan, Netflix etc cannot be used.
Australia does not offer great data deals for mobile devices 60gb p/mnth plans the data could be used up in less then a week, going to the cinemas or the watching australian content on traditonal tv.
Physical media ie dvd,blu ray must be kept with the same arguement of keeping cinemas especially in terms of quality of the content, availability of the content ie for streaming services certain movies will be available for a period of time then will be taken down to make way for other films, having physical media i can watch what i want when i want as i know i hold the physical content
End of the day physical media would have more jobs then what Streaming services can provide
I am tired of crime, revenge, ideology and horror in movies. The movies that stand the test of time are based upon quality productions with universal values dear to the hearts of ordinary people. These values are not driven by politics or idealism but what really counts when the chips are down. We are seeing people re-evaluate priorities with the COVID 19 pandemic where fame and fortune count for little but love, loyalty, community and respect for all count for a lot.
We only have to think of the movies that inspired us, warmed our hearts, are watched multiple times and can never be forgotten to know what is still relevant for today.
