According to Arman, “female-focused comedy has always been my ‘jam’. I’ve spent years using comedy as a tool to try and flip dominant narratives around what it means to be a woman – from being a head writer on Craig Anderson’s sassy and crude all-female sketch comedy series, “Late Night Angel Weenie Baby”, to writing one woman stand-up comedy shows about body hair removal and pregnancy. As a Mum of a two year old and a three year old, I’m having to schedule filmmaking in around my kids’ nap times and / or their tantrums. I don’t have the time to waste on telling stories that I don’t deeply care about. I’m personally connected to The Mother Load.
“Thematically, it speaks to a world I know – to that overwhelming feeling that there’s no perfect time to become a parent; to how easy it is to bury one’s past in reckless abandon; and ultimately, it speaks to the very human desire to be loved. I wanted to dig deep into the consequences of a teen pregnancy, ten years later. I was curious about what would happen if the child you gave up for adoption turned up at your doorstep and that child wasn’t much younger than you. I wanted to explore the idea that families aren’t always cookie cutter perfect.

“Comedy is ripe in a story like that – not simply through zippy one-liners and the hilariously chaotic circumstance we will find our characters in, but also in their failings. It’s there in Kali’s helplessness and her fear in truly connecting with Owen, and the revelation that Owen, despite being smart and wise beyond her years, is really just a lost kid who desperately wants a Mum.
“I’m really proud of The Mother Load. I’m proud of the team of both emerging and seasoned Queensland based creatives that came together to make the pilot. I’m proud at having cast two culturally diverse women in the lead roles and I’m proud that the majority of our cast and crew were women.”
