Director James Mangold has told The Hollywood Reporter that a sequel to Logan is in the (very early, more conversational than anything else) development stage, and it will focus on Dafne’s Keen’s pint-sized killing machine, Laura.
Mangold cited the success of this year’s Wonder Woman movie as a contributing factor, saying, “Patty’s [Jenkins] success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that right now, dreaming.”
Interesting stuff. For his part, Jackman has ruled out being apart of any future projects even behind the scenes, saying, “No, I won’t be a producer on a Laura sequel. But I will be lining up on the Thursday night at 10 p.m. to watch it though. She is just phenomenal.”
How would any future projects tie in with existing X-Men movie continuity? God knows – and it’s not like the studio is being too careful in any case.* It would be a shame, though, if they decided to keep teenage Laura sequestered away from The New Mutants for petty reasons of chronology.
*We are absolutely gonna get a pedantic comment breaking down the divergent X-Men timelines, mark my words.
