Can we all just agree that Red Dog: True Blue is gonna be huge? Seriously, your grandmother is going to put this movie in her will, probably at your expense. Kriv Stenders’ prequel to his 2011 crowd pleaser has all the right ingredients for an across-the-board winner: it’s a period piece, a coming of age story, it has a cracker of a soundtrack, and Bryan Brown is in it. That’s an unbeatable combo. The ridiculously charismatic mutt is just icing on the cake.
Levi Miller, soon to be seen in Aus-lit adaptation Jasper Jones, is the lonesome kid shipped off to the Western Australian outback who finds a friend in the abandoned puppy he dubs “Red”, while Jason Isaacs, Hanna Mangan Lawrence, Justine Clarke and Steve Le Marquand round out the supporting cast. Red Dog: True Blue hits cinemas on Boxing Day.
