The opening sequence of the 1995 animated feature version of Ghost in the Shell is iconic as all hell. How iconic, you ask? Well, we wouldn’t have the haunting, transgressive titles of HBO hit Westworld without it, that’s for sure.
The sequence features the slow, hypnotically staged assembly of a robot body that we come to realise is lead character, Major Kusanagi (Scarlett Johansson in the new version), tracking her “birth” from the molecular level on up. Now we get to see it it translated into live(ish) action, thanks to the below video from IGN. Check it out:
