After establishing one of modern cinema’s greatest heroines as the director of the first installment of The Hunger Games, Gary Ross is set to (more than) double his luck with Ocean’s 8, the all-female reboot of Steven Soderbergh’s George Clooney-Matt Damon-and-Brad Pitt led Ocean’s trilogy.
Replicating that series’ star-heavy approach, this new crew of safecrackers will be played by Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina (we’re tipping the Asian-American rapper and comedian to steal the show), Rihanna (we’re tipping the Battleship star to suck) and Helena Bonham Carter (we’re tipping the quirky Brit to chew the scenery something chronic), in what must rate as the headiest clutch of actresses gathered on one film set since…um…Steel Magnolias?
Penned by Gary Ross and Olivia Milch, Ocean’s 8 (in which eight women plan and execute a heist in New York) is set in the same “universe” (with Sandra Bullock rumoured to be the sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean) as the original heist films from Steven Soderbergh (who will be on board as a producer), and has already received the blessing of Matt Damon. “I think it’s going to be awesome,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “I think it’s going to be fantastic. They’re going to kick ass.”
Rumours that Hollywood studios are looking to put all-female reboots of The Magnificent Seven, The Dirty Dozen, Reservoir Dogs, Stand By Me, The Lost Boys, The Boys In The Band, Streamers, The Killing, Platoon, and Midnight Cowboy into development are completely unfounded.
