Back in 2013, the world was introduced to the concept of The Purge (for 12 hours a year, citizens can commit crime, including murder, with no legal consequences) fthrough a Blumhouse production of the same name written and directed by James DeMonaco which basically wrote the blueprint for the innovative genre production company’s strategy of release – make genre fare cheap, spend the brunt of the dollars on marketing it as if it’s a blockbuster. The Purge films regularly opened at number 1 at the US box office, with 2014’s The Purge: Anarchy surpassing the rush of the original.
Now comes The Purge: Election Year in which our hero played by Frank Grillo is assigned to protect a female presidential hopeful on purge night. In this all too brief clip we see the neo-nazi mercenaries assigned to track her down finding that their latest kills are casualties of war.
Alas, in Australia, none of the films have been exhibited on the big screen, apart from a recent one-off screening at the 2016 SciFi Film Festival in Sydney, but have developed a devoted fanbase of genre enthusiasts.
If you have never seen a Purge movie, and you like action, make sure you catch The Purge: Election Year which is available on VOD, DVD and Blu-ray from October 26, 2016
