Aspiring filmmakers, content creators and first-time storytellers are being invited to put their creativity to the test as the Quick Takes 44-Hour Film Competition returns as part of the 2026 Newcastle Comedy Festival.
Presented by the Newcastle Comedy Festival and Newcastle Film School, the competition is completely free to enter and open to anyone, regardless of age or experience.
From seasoned filmmakers to groups of friends armed with nothing more than a smartphone, competitors will have just 44 hours to write, shoot and edit a short film from mystery prompts.
This year’s competition features a $1,000 cash prize for Best Film, made possible thanks to the generous support of local production companies, the Newcastle Comedy Festival and Newcastle Film School. Competitors will also be in the running for a range of additional prizes generously provided by FilmInk and Sony Pictures.
Quick Takes spokesman Zac Garred said the competition was created to make filmmaking accessible to everyone. “You don’t need expensive equipment or years of experience to take part. If you’ve got an idea and you’re willing to have a go, you’re exactly who this competition is for. Last year we saw incredible creativity from people of all backgrounds, and that’s what makes Quick Takes so special. It’s about bringing people together, backing local talent and celebrating storytelling.”
The competition will conclude with a public screening of the finalist films and a wrap party at the Newcastle Comedy Club, with a special appearance by acclaimed actor, writer and comedian Dane Simpson (Cop This, Fisk, The Emu War). Winners will be announced as the Newcastle Comedy Festival celebrates the close of its biggest and most successful festival to date.
