VINCENT WARD – “ONE OF FILM’S GREAT IMAGE-MAKERS” – DESCENDS ONTO CINEMA NOVA THIS JULY WITH TWO IN-CONVERSATION SESSIONS OF HIS MOST ACCLAIMED MASTERPIECES
CARLTON’S CINEMA NOVA WELCOMES ACCLAIMED NEW ZEALAND FILMMAKER VINCENT WARD FOR TWO EXCLUSIVE IN-CONVERSATION MEET THE FILMMAKER SESSIONS; THE PALME D’OR-NOMINATED FANTASY THE NAVIGATOR: A MEDIEVAL ODYSSEY AND OSCAR-WINNING FANTASY WHAT DREAMS MAY COME STARRING ROBIN WILLIAMS.
The Boston Globe called him “one of films great image-makers”. Robert Ebert referred to him as “a true visionary”.
Notably credited as a screenwriter of Alien 3, and an executive producer of The Last Samurai, Vincent Ward’s catalogue of work speaks for itself. To label Ward simply as an award-winning filmmaker is an understatement, and the chance to witness two in-person Q&A screenings with Ward is a rarity that is exclusive to Cinema Nova this July.
“A haunting, original film… combining (Werner) Herzog’s dogged visionary zeal with (George) Lucas’ showmanship” (David Arsen, Newsweek), the Palme d’Or nominated THE NAVIGATOR: A MEDIEVAL FANTASY screens at Nova on Wednesday July 8, at 7pm with Vincent Ward in-attendance for a post-film Q&A. Having received a standing ovation at Cannes, this rare screening of the 1988 cult favourite is a startling fusion of medieval fantasy and time travel science fiction, quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
When a young boy is afflicted by apocalyptic visions in medieval England – believing he is divinely inspired to save his village from the Black Death – he persuades a group of men to follow him into a tunnel, only to emerge in 1987 Auckland to negotiate the terrors of a strange new world, whilst seeking to save his own.
Starring Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding JR, and winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects as well as receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction, the surreal and sentimental WHAT DREAMS MAY COME screens prior to a Q&A with Vincent Ward on Thursday July 9, at 6.40pm. A film “so breathtaking (and) so bold in its imagination” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times), this Ward masterpiece is a poignant piece of the power of love.
Robin Williams’ emotional performance, as a physician who finds himself inhabiting an afterlife made up of the landscapes from his wife’s paintings, regularly ranks among the best of the late performer’s works.
