“I’ve always been fascinated by the polarity of the human condition,” says writer, director and actor Alan King. “Why are feelings of fullness equally countered with emptiness, how do we feel in control yet also in chaos, how can situations be both so funny and sad in such equal measure, why would violence present itself during times of peace and how can peace prevail so strongly during times of violence?”
Alan King certainly went there with his eye-popping, experimental 2024 debut Vincent – about an isolated writer searching feverishly for his muse – and the Aussie auteur is not holding back with his upcoming follow-up La La Falls. Eager to leave his tumultuous past far behind, controversial author Vincent Tremblay (played by King himself), now lives a simple life, off-grid, in the Australian bush, alongside his close mate, veteran outbacker, Gunther (Bill Evans). However, the men’s tranquility is suddenly shattered, following a dark discovery in a nearby dam.
“La La Falls was shot in just six days on a micro budget, with a crew of just six, drawing on many of the Dogme 95 principles,” says Alan King. “We used hand held camera, natural light where possible, and minimal art dept to allow this to happen. A combination of both structured script and improvisation made up the film’s narrative.”
