Project Hourglass, directed by and starring Benjamin Mathews, alongside Bob Morley and Kya Stewart, has won the People’s Choice Award at Tropfest 2026. The film combines emotion, and action-forward storytelling, delivering a film that captivated audiences.
The film follows Jacob, a man presumed dead after leaping from a bridge, who returns three years later claiming to be part of a secret government program. His fiancé, Katie – played by Kya Stewart – must decide whether to trust him or get him help. The performances of the central trio balance intensity with heart, keeping viewers engaged from start to finish.
Produced by Holly-Anna Mathews and Larissa Calarco, the film reflects a tight-knit creative team committed to bold, exciting storytelling. Ben Mathews was also awarded the Runways Award (a global career acceleration program), while Josh Flavell was recognised for Best Cinematography, highlighting the film’s striking and cinematic visuals.
For Kya Stewart, appearing in a lead role in a film celebrated by audiences is a milestone. Her portrayal of Katie shows both vulnerability and determination, hinting at the action-forward storytelling she’s most passionate about- bold, high-energy narratives that push characters and audiences into exciting new territory.
With its People’s Choice win and multiple festival accolades, Project Hourglass is part of a new wave of Australian filmmaking.
