The Western genre was once considered outdated and overshadowed by more contemporary themes. The glory days of these pictures were between 1940 and 1960, when some viewers could still remember what the old America was like.
Luckily, the genre has made a grand return in the modern age, perhaps due to the mass intrigue among modern viewers of what that period of history was like. It’s led to some interesting twists on the genre as well, with The Pinkerton set to be the next entry that aims to subvert traditional tropes.
Westerns Have Made a Grand Return
Westerns almost disappeared from the film industry after their Golden Age, and filmmakers seemed reluctant to bring them back to the big screen. Recently, though, the genre has made a resurgence in other areas of entertainment, and this has led filmmakers to revisit it.
Online slots played a huge part in bringing Westerns back, and there are countless games that use tropes from the legendary pictures. What do We Know About the Film?
The Pinkerton is set to be the latest cinematic offering that pushes the boundaries of the Western genre and helps to expand it beyond its traditional tropes. It was initially announced in 2023, with Jason Bateman set to direct. Bateman’s best known for his role in Ozark [pictured, directing on set], but he has also turned his hand to directing on the silver screen a few times before with Bad Words and The Family Fang in 2013 and 2015 respectively.
The Pinkerton is said to be a supernatural Western, but there haven’t been many other details released. The name suggests that it will be based on the famous private detective agency from the US in the 1850s, which was known for stopping an assassination plot on Abraham Lincoln. The iconic president also hired Pinkerton agents during the Civil War, so the new picture could be a reimagining of these events.
Production Company Known for Secrecy
The Pinkerton is being produced by Bad Robot, the production company founded by Bryan Burk and J. J Abrams. That’s promising, as the company has been responsible for plenty of amazing pictures over its 25-year history. Some of the standout offerings include the Mission Impossible series and the Cloverfield franchise.
Bad Robot is famous for keeping many of its films secret until close to release, and this was seen with Cloverfield in particular. It seems that the same is happening with The Pinkerton, which may end up dropping in 2025 with little fanfare.
There hasn’t been an announcement to say that The Pinkerton has been cancelled, so it’s reasonable to expect it’s still in production. It’s likely to hit screens next year and could be a great addition to the ever-growing Western genre.
