The accolades continue to roll in for local prodco, Pikelet Pictures, with their acclaimed first series, Videoland, named as a finalist in the C21 International Drama Awards 2024. The nomination for Best Newform Drama Series adds to Videoland’s impressive awards, including Best Series in the Comedy Competition at Series Mania earlier this year and achieving Top 10 debuts on Netflix in both Australia and New Zealand. With an international acquisition by Canal+ leading to its recent launch on MyCanal in October, Videoland continues to make waves globally.
The series, directed by Jessica Smith [pictured, left] and produced by Scarlett Koehne [pictured, right], brings together heartfelt comedy, engaging characters, and an inclusive narrative that has resonated widely with audiences. Videoland’s Top 10 success on Netflix ANZ and its reception at Series Mania affirm its appeal to audiences both at home and abroad, setting a new standard for Australian digital-first series.
Also announced this week, Videoland director Jessica Smith has been nominated by the Australian Directors’ Guild for Best Direction of Longform Online at this year’s ADG Awards. The ADG Awards are renowned for celebrating the finest directorial achievements in Australia, making this recognition a significant milestone in Smith’s career. It is her first ADG nomination, one that she is proud to receive for her debut series.
“Of course it’s an honour to be nominated,” Smith said, “but to receive the recognition for a story that is so personal to me is extra special. I’m so proud to see Videoland celebrated — it’s a reminder of how important it is to share stories that reflect our communities.”
Meanwhile, Videoland producer Scarlett Koehne also recently received recognition, being named one of Screen Producers Australia’s (SPA) Ones to Watch, underscoring her commitment to the local screen industry.
“Being recognised by C21 is invaluable for us in creating opportunities overseas. Participating in Ones To Watch off the back of that puts us in a great position for next year” said Koehne “I’m
excited for what comes next.”
The recognition from the C21 International Drama Awards places Videoland alongside some of the world’s most compelling newform series. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on Thursday 5 December, during Content London.
The ADG Awards will take place at The Astor Theatre in Melbourne on Friday 22 November.
