Even though The Witcher season 4 has yet to hit our screens, season five has already been given the green light. Filming for the newest season commenced in April, with Liam Hemsworth playing the role of Geralt.
The Witcher Series Takes Heavy Inspiration from the Games
The Witcher series has always taken heavy inspiration from the games, but interestingly, the show has yet to touch on Gwent. Gwent is a card game that allows players to place wagers based on the deck of cards they have acquired, before battling it out against other players. It’s almost similar to poker and blackjack but with a unique twist.
This isn’t the first time a classic game has been given an overhaul, as casinos have been taking this approach for years. Traditional games like roulette have been upgraded with new variants including Lightning Roulette Live and Live Quantum Auto Roulette. More betting options have also been added, including corner bets, split bets, and 50/50 bets.
If The Witcher was to bring Gwent to the new game, or even to the series, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it get a bit of an upgrade. This would be exciting for fans, who have been playing the game for several years. Gwent is anticipated to be a part of the new Witcher game too, even though the release date has yet to be confirmed.
An Intensive Filming Schedule
Liam Hemsworth has taken over Henry Cavill for seasons four and five. It looks to be an intensive filming schedule too, as season five is going to start filming almost immediately after season four, with only a short break. Liam Hemsworth has said that his training regime for the show is nothing short of insane and that he has been studying the books heavily. Henry Cavill is a huge fan of The Witcher but disagreed with the writers about the path the show was taking. He felt as though they were straying away from the source material and chose to leave based on disagreements.
Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer has also been in touch with Hemsworth, in an attempt to maintain the synergy between the characters on-screen given the new casting. Laurence Fishburne from The Matrix is also going to be joining the cast for season four as Regis. He’s a fan favourite from both the games and the books, so this is set to be an exciting time for fans.
Although the new casting has left some feeling disappointed, many fans are excited about the new Geralt and are keen to see how well Hemsworth can live up to the iconic character. The show’s producers have also left off quite a lot of source material in the previous seasons, so it may be that they use the upcoming seasons as a chance to address that. For fans, this could involve some eagerly-anticipated monsters, or as mentioned above, games such as Gwent.
Season four is set to hit Netflix in summer 2025, with the delay being the result of the WGA strike.
