Last week we reported in detail on WIFT’s protests over AACTA Awards’ lack of transparency in their selection criteria, and now comes this pointy parody of one of this country’s best known, and IMO best ever, films, Picnic at Hanging Rock. We reckon that Peter Weir would be proud.
Why the video? Well, you can watch it, or you could read this, which basically outlines how a Canadian director (albeit a female), Larysa Kondracki was hired to work on the upcoming Fremantle Media television remake/re-adaptation of Picnic at Hanging Rock alongside Australian director, Michael Rymer.
Orchestrated by filmmaker Megan Riakos (Crushed), who plays the central role here, and WIFT president Sophie Mathiesen (Drama; the redheaded actress here), the short video certainly sends a strong message – Australian women can direct! Above all else, though, we adore the initiative and protest on show here and hope to see more in the future!
