It’s been four years since we last got a dose of hyper-stylised vampire-on-werewolf action, and although it’s quite possible nobody would have noticed if we never get another, we’re getting one anyway. Kate Beckinsale’s rogue vampire, Selene, is back, taking on new Lycan leader Marius (Tobias Menzies) for… reasons.
Honestly, it’s possible even the creative team behind the Underworld series can’t unpack the films’ moribund and overly complicated plot and background mythology any more, which has the plodding self-seriousness of bad doorstopper fantasy fiction. Still, there is a market for this stuff, clearly, and if you can ignore the achingly bad storytelling and just focus on the aesthetics, you may be in for a passable time.
Underworld: Blood Wars is in cinemas on December 1, 2016.
