But as many stars have shown down the years, it doesn’t come without its demons either, with many hitting rock bottom and never returning.

However, there have also been many icons that have bounced back from paths of self-destruction too, their careers only going on a temporary hiatus while they go through drug rehab or an alcohol detox, finding stardom once again.

But who are the stars that have shown the world that you can overcome adversity to see your career flourish, providing inspiration to us all?

Robert Downey Jr

Perhaps the best example is Robert Downey Jr [pictured in Short Cuts], one of Hollywood’s leading men. Look at his top 10 films, and you’ll find a cool split between him pre-breakdown and addiction and post. Once touted as one of film’s brightest stars, he threw it all away, battling with drugs and having run ins with the law.

He sought out rehab though and with the help of friends and those around him, returned to the silver screen and has since played some truly iconic roles, including in Iron Man, The Avengers and Sherlock Holmes.

Tim Allen

Many people might not know this, but Tim Allen [pictured in Christmas with the Kranks] spent two years in prison before hitting the big time for cocaine possession in 1978.

He has spoken candidly about that time, saying in an interview with The Washington Times, “It was a watershed moment. It put me in a position of great humility, and I was able to make amends to friends and family and refocus my life on setting and achieving goals.”

And that he certainly did, going on to star in many hit movies as well as sitcoms such as Home Improvement.

Matthew McConaughey

McConaughey [pictured in Dazed & Confused] has perhaps overcome two hurdles in his life. The first being arrested for possession of marijuana in 1999, and then a string of bad rom-com movies throughout the 2000s.

Of course, overcoming his arrest and potentially a life of crime is his main achievement, before going on to star in some incredible award-winning movies throughout the 2010s. He’s a great example of not only overcoming hurdles, but also how to resurrect your career and taking the bull by the horns. There’s plenty more to come from this man too.
