Saw is the little horror franchise that could, going from humble low budget beginnings to spawn six sequels that culminated in 20010’s Saw 3D. It was also Australian – or close enough for our purposes – being crafted by Leigh Whannell and James Wan. It seems only fitting, then, that a couple of Aussies have picked up the torch some seven years after the last installment: Michael and Peter Spierig, the siblings behind the great Undead, the interesting Daybreakers, and the criminally underseen Predestination.
Saw: Legacy is shooting in Ontario in the third quarter of the year, so we should expect an early 2017 release. That’s pretty much all the news at hand right now: no word on casting or whether it’s a sequel, prequel, interquel, reboot or whatever your franchise buzzword of choice may be. However, the Spierigs are talented filmmakers with a sincere love of genre fare (they came as close as anyone to getting up a Dark Crystal sequel, if you want some cool trivia to drop) so this will be worth keeping an eye out for.
