The rest of this post will show you seven of the most inspirational sports movies of all time. Itching to see what movies make the cut? Keep reading.
1. Glory Road
Glory Road is a movie that’s based on events that led up to the 1966 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s Division 1 Basketball Tournament. In this competition, Texas Western College got the better of Kentucky to clinch the championship.
Although Texas Western had great white players, coach Don Haskins decided to take an unconventional approach by creating a team where black players dominated. This was the first time something like this was done in basketball. As such, it signified the start of the end of discrimination in basketball.
One quote from this movie that’ll live in the heads of viewers for a long time came from Josh Lucas (who played Don Haskins): “Your dignity’s inside you. Nobody can take something away from you if you don’t give them.”
Glory Road isn’t just a feel-good and motivational movie, it’s one that might just prompt you to turn your lounge room into a cinema to absorb the full experience.
DID YOU KNOW: The photo that was shown at the end of the Glory Road film was of the actual 1965/1966 Texas Western basketball team, and not one featuring the actors.
2. The Sandlot
This movie tells the story of a young boy, Scotty Smalls, who moved to a new neighbourhood with his mother and stepfather. Baseball is his dream sport and he desperately wants to learn about it.
Benny Rodriguez, the neighbourhood’s baseball guru, decides to give Scotty a shot and starts training him. Shortly after, Scotty becomes part and parcel of a group of baseball friends.
Their adventures revolve around baseball adventures, sleepovers, and the beautiful lifeguard positioned at the local pool. That said, beyond the neighbourhood’s sandlot fence is a ball-eating dog (the Beast) that the kids must contend with to keep their baseball flame alive.
3. Coach Carter

This film revolves around a high school basketball coach named Carter. Although he has a team of talented basketball players, he benches all of them due to their shortcomings academically.
Coach Carter’s decision to bench his star players and bring the best out of them outside the court is met by stiff criticism — we’re talking protests! But rather than backing out, he doubles down on his decision. Eventually, his players improve academically and showcase their mettle on the basketball court.
The movie Coach Carter inspires us to be the best we can possibly be in all aspects of our lives. And while it might be difficult at first, you’ll reap the dividends in the end.
FUN FACT: The Coach Carter movie was a success, although some people see it as one of the most underrated movies ever. As such, it isn’t surprising that the lead actor, Samuel L. Jackson, was nominated for several awards. He later went on to win the “Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture” award in the 2006 Image Awards (NCAAP).
4. The Blind Side
One movie you might need to have tissues on standby for is The Blind Side. This film tells the story of Michael Oher. Poor and living on the streets, Michael is later adopted by the wealthy Tuohy family that treats him as their own.
Although this adoption raised some eyebrows, Leigh Anne Tuohy gives Michael the motivation, love, and attention he needs to be successful on the football field. Micheal turns out to be a success. In 2009, he was a first round pick for the Baltimore Ravens franchise and went on to win the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.
The Blind Side is one of the best movies due to its stand-out dialogue.
One of the funniest was when Michael asked Leigh Anne Tuohy: “Mr. Tuohy sleeps on the couch?” To this question, she answered: “Only when he’s bad.”
5. Bend It Like Beckham
This film is themed around an Indian family living in London trying to raise their daughters in the traditional way. The elder sister Pinky is preparing for a colourful Indian wedding and a lifetime of making chapatti. Younger daughter Jess has a vision of playing professional soccer like English football legend David Beckham. This vision was fuelled by her friend, Jules, who invited her to try out at a local football team.
When Jess’s parents hear of her dream to become a footballer, all hell breaks loose. You see, they’ve got plans for her: a law degree followed up by marriage to a well-to-do Indian. However, Jess plays the rebellious daughter and continues to chase her dreams of being a professional footballer.
Her local team helps her become a better version of herself. After heroics from Jess and Jules propels their team to a championship win, they receive scholarships to top American universities and a rare shot to achieve their goals.
6. The Rookie

The Rookie tells the tale of a high school science teacher called Jim Morris, who never had the chance to take his baseball career to the next level due to the challenges he faced while growing up.
After receiving backing from his students and the community at large, Jim made a return to the baseball pitch by trying out for a Major League Baseball (MLB) camp. There, he gets the green light from the Tampa Bay Devils Ray. Jim Morris later goes on to spend two professional seasons in the MLB.
DID YOU KNOW: As seen on a Box Office Mojo report, The Rookie was a successful movie, earning over $80 million in revenue. Well, this isn’t surprising as the movie was well-structured and told a story that’ll fan the flame of resilience in viewers’ hearts.
