The new Australian indie feature Enter Sanctum paints a bleak but compelling picture of what our future might hold…

“It’s not a haunted house film,” says director Michael Budd of his new film Enter Sanctum. “It’s a haunted conscience film.”

A dark-hued blend of sci-fi, horror and speculative fiction, Enter Sanctum is set in a toxic future, where a luxury residence offering clean living for the elite is constructed on the foundations of Sanctum, a former asylum. As new residents settle in, they begin to experience the same disturbing mental afflictions that once plagued the building’s former occupants.

“Sanctum asks a simple but uncomfortable question,” explains Michael Budd. “If we can afford to live in a clean world, does that mean we’ve cleansed ourselves of what built it? Wealth can buy filtered air, automated systems and marble floors — but it can’t insulate you from inherited trauma.”

In Enter Sanctum, Budd – also a frequent actor, with roles in the likes of The Matrix Reloaded and The Cold Light of Day – takes on the role of Walt, the caretaker of the eerie Sanctum residence. “Walt thinks he’s maintaining a building,” says Budd. “In truth, he’s guarding a lie. The caretaker becomes the gatekeeper of denial — and denial is far more dangerous than any apparition.”

Dark in tone and deeply challenging, Enter Sanctum is certainly an enormous route-change after Budd’s previous films, Ruby’s Choice (2022), a family-themed comedy drama starring Jane Seymour and Jacqueline McKenzie. “I shot Enter Sanctum before Ruby’s Choice as a follow-up to my horror film Love of My Life when I was convinced that I wanted to explore horror themes. Enter Sanctum ultimately took longer to finish due to the complexities of VFX inherent to the story.”

Enter Sanctum will screen on Thursday, 26th February 2026 at Dendy Newtown with cast and crew in attendance. Click here to buy tickets.
