If – and it’s a big if – the rest of debut writer/director Kelly Fremon’s coming-of-age movie is half as good as the first 30 seconds of the trailer, we could be looking at the comedy of the year.

In The Edge of Seventeen Hailee Steinfeld is put-upon high school outsider Nadine, whose life goes into freefall when she discovers her best – and it looks like only – friend (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating her handsome-ass older brother Blake Jenner. It;s being billed as a John Hughes-style comedy, and it looks it – all teen angst leavened by sharp dialogue. We drift too far into the maudlin in the middle there, but if we get Woody Harrelson doling out sardonic advice every 15 minutes or so, this could be a winner.

The Edge of Seventeen is out on September 29. 2016.
