Coming into its second year now, the Screenwave International Film Festival has grown by 150% since its inaugural event last year, making it a strong new contender on the festival calendar. Over 50 films are screening this year.

This year’s opening night film is Sonita, the remarkable, inspirational documentary of a defiant 14-year old Afghan refugee living in Iran whose dream in life is to become a rap star. Rokhsareh Ghaemmaghami’s documentary heads an incredible roster of films, including the controversial Tickled; aid-worker drama A Perfect Day; top notch Australian comedy Down Under; Werner Herzog’s look at the internet, Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World; the acclaimed crime drama Hell or High Water; and Nicolas Winding Refn’s divisive Neon Demon.

The Call of the Surf Film Festival is also returning as a key part of the overall program, and some 15 festival guests, including actors, directors, producers, writers and cinematographers, are yet to be announced.

The 2017 Screenwave International Film Festival runs from January 4 – 28 at Coffs Harbour and Bellingen. For more info, swing by the official site.
