... an inspirational celebration of art bringing people together.
Documenting the lead-up to an elaborate festival art piece, taking place in Sydney’s Western suburbs, All That We Are is an inspirational celebration of art bringing people together.
Held at the annual REAL Festival on the Nepean River, the artwork sees professional performers and local volunteers join forces for a spectacular public attraction experienced both on the ground and in the air. The documentary details the hard-work, drama and the passion that goes into a piece that suspended 35 individuals 30 metres in the air. Most of the participants had no performance experience; some with a fear of flying, but still voluntarily chose to participate. ‘Who doesn’t want to fly?’ one of them admits.
This is a delightful documentary that has a lot to say about the process of producing art. It’s extraordinary to see the faith that the community has in participating in the artists’ grand vision. The volunteers are the heart of this story and it’s a true testament to the human spirit that they are all giving up their time to this project, even when facing personal struggles, fatigue and uncertainty.
The story of performance artist Keila Terrencio de Paula and her journey conquering her fear of heights is especially emotionally impactful.
Speaking of emotions, the film gets surprisingly tense as the performance approaches, which due to an unforeseen issue, tests the safety of the volunteers. It becomes apparent that the whole exercise goes against the entire point of the artwork of unifying the community and celebrating individual diversity.
You’ll have to wait to see what transpires, but that is the fun of All That We Are; not knowing what is coming next and the joy in seeing it through. It tells an extraordinary case of an art project that could’ve gone horribly wrong, but due to a collection of individuals with a shared passion and supportive network that they build with each other, it truly soars.
