Australia’s best film festival, the annual Revelation Perth International Film Festival will celebrate its silver jubilee this year, returning to Luna Cinemas Leederville from 7 – 17 July.

Screening the most interesting local and international independent cinema, as programmed by sometime-FilmInk contributor Jack Sargeant, the festival features films direct from Rotterdam, Berlin, Venice, Locarno and SXSW film festivals.

It’s the latter that has been chosen as Opening Night, with Kane Senes and Hannah Barlow’s social media slasher SISSY, starring Aisha Dee, Yerin Ha, Lucy Barret, Emily de Margheriti, Daniel Monks, Shaun Martindale and Barlow.

Also announced today is documentary Navalny, a fly-on-the-wall portrait of Putin’s arch-enemy Alexi Navalny, who was poisoned with a lethal nerve agent in 2020 and is currently imprisoned and on standby to take over the Presidency.

Other Australian works screening include SXSW Audience Award winner SHADOW, Back-To-Back Theatres provocative drama made collaboratively by people with disabilities both in-front as well as behind the camera.

Micro-budget filmmaking is represented by Tim Barretto’s BASSENDREAM, shot on 16mm film and awash with ’90s nostalgia.

Also screening is Neighbours star Georgie Stone’s personal short doco THE DREAMLIFE OF GEORGIE STONE, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and will play a key part in the “Different Voices” strand at Revelation with two other films.

As per previous special events at Revelation, the fusion of music and film is often the highlight, and this year will see DECIBEL NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE perform live 20 x 2 minute compositions, accompanied by video, originally created for online delivery.

There’s also WESTRALIA DAY on Saturday 9 July at The Backlot, shining a spotlight on locally-produced short films and long form content and the festival will conclude with a celebration of some of WA’s talented emerging filmmakers with the popular GET YOUR SHORTS ON! and the City of Vincent Film Project special event on Sunday 17 July.

The full program announced early June.

Revelation prides itself on ethical sponsors, and need your support, so why not donate a tax deductible $25 to mark the 25th year of Australia’s most interesting film cultural event.
