Naarm production house Typecast, an independent multi-disciplinary production company specialising in Indigenous creativity, today announced the appointment of Christopher Kam as their new Head of Development.

In the new role, Kam will oversee Typecast’s slate and serve as an Executive Producer on select projects, guiding the company’s storytelling vision across scripted and narrative projects.

With more than 15 years of experience in the international film and television industry across the UK and Australia, Kam brings a wealth of creative and strategic expertise to Typecast. His career spans senior leadership roles where he has developed, packaged, and produced acclaimed scripted content, championed emerging talent, and implemented successful creative strategies for major studios and production houses.

From 2023 to 2024, Kam was Development Producer at BBC Studios ANZ, where he led the development of Ghosts (Paramount+). Prior to that, he spent nine years in London as Head of Development at Eleventh Hour Films, leading the scripted team and shaping the company’s development strategy. Kam also served as Director of Scripted Development at NBCUniversal International Studios, where he was studio executive on HANNA (Amazon) and The Capture seasons 1 and 2 (BBC), and script editor on The Long Song (BBC).

A passionate advocate for nurturing new voices, Kam has consistently created opportunities for emerging storytellers. In 2018, he established a partnership between Soho Theatre and NBCUniversal to build pathways for theatre talent to transition into television writing. Most recently, he served as a mentor for Screen Queensland’s inaugural Writers Room Program.

“We’re over the moon that Christopher has decided to join Typecast,” said Tony Briggs, Company Director of Typecast. “He brings a level of skill and expertise to our team that will help take our business to the next level. We’re looking forward to our next chapter with Christopher on board.”

Commenting on his new role, Kam said, “I have been a fan of Tony’s work for a long time. As a TV executive who has lived and worked overseas, when I watched Australian content, I always wanted to see more shows that represented the multicultural Australia that I grew up in. Typecast’s mission is to tell stories that represent a diverse Australia and I’m thrilled to be joining the team.”

VicScreen CEO Caroline Pitcher said “VicScreen is committed to supporting First Peoples-led companies to build creative and commercial capability. We’re delighted that Christopher Kam will be bringing his experience and savvy to Typecast. We’re excited to see the projects that will emerge from the collaboration between Christopher and Tony Briggs, one of the nation’s leading Indigenous screen storytellers.”

Typecast is supported by VicScreen’s First Peoples Capabilities Grant.
