Opening the festival and Winner of the Audience Award at Sydney Film Festival 2022, KEEP STEPPING, where director Luke Cornish spent years following two female protagonists Patricia and Gabi, as they try to win Australia’s biggest street dance competition: Destructive Steps. KEEP STEPPING is an inspiring coming-of-age story that provides a hopeful and insightful perspective into an industry that’s been underestimated by the general public. Special guests, including director Luke Cornish, will join the festival at Macquarie Park for a post-screening Q&A, and producer Philip Busfield will join the festival at Campbelltown.
Highlights of the program include BROKER, starring the winner of Cannes Best Actor Song Kang-ho (PARASITE, 2019), is a delightful tender Korean drama by Kore-eda Hirokazu (THE SHOPLIFTERS, 2018); THE HUMANS, a stylish and cinematic piece of visual storytelling by writer-director Stephen Karam adapted from his Tony Award-winning play; an absorbing documenyary set in Hunan province in China, HIDDEN LETTER, documented the centuries-old secret written language connects two modern Chinese women, Hu Xin and Simu.
Also in the program are Australian director Macario De Souza’s 6 FESTIVALS, an emotional tale of friendship between three teenagers who throw themselves into a whirlwind of music festivals in an attempt to escape reality; Winner of seven Irish Film and Television Awards including Best Film, THE QUIET GIRL, Colm Bairéad’s beautiful family drama portrays the loneliness of an innocent child oblivious to the adult world around her. HUDA’S SALON, directed by two-time international Oscar nominee Hany Abu-Assad (OMAR, 2014), is a gripping drama based on real events and follows an innocent Palestinian woman who becomes trapped in a web of blackmail and deceit.
We are also proud to present three Australian short films from this year’s Sydney Film Festival, including Steve Anthopoulos’ VOICE ACTIVATED, supported by the Screenability Initiative, showcasing provocative cinema by filmmakers with disability; nominated for the Dendy Awards for Australia Short Films, POLENTA by Adrian Di Salle; and STONEFISH, a thrilling black comedy from Australian director Megan Smart.
