Get ready for RUN CLUB, a fast-paced, hilariously dark digital series premiering on Instagram Reels this Monday, 5th May. Created by Grace Julia and Nikki Brown, the hivemind duo behind viral vertical series Let’s Get Ducking Famous and My Girlfriend is Worm, this five-part comedy-thriller is set to become your next obsession.
Produced with principal production funding from Screen Australia and support from Screen Queensland through the Channel Lab: Short Cuts initiative, RUN CLUB marks the beginning of the pair’s new production company, Laughlines.
ABOUT THE SERIES
After being banned from Brisbane’s bougiest gym, Nat (Natyse Chan, Ruby Blue) turns adversity into opportunity by launching Run Club. Set against the city’s iconic riverfront, it’s an instant success, attracting local, athleisurewear-loving caffeine-enthusiasts, and a few more questionable characters. When members start disappearing, Nat begins to suspect her housemate Tash (Emily Kristopher, CrackerMilk), who insisted the club should be ‘exclusive’.
More concerned about her reputation than the unfolding murder mystery, Nat fails to realise she could be next on the killer’s hit list.
The ensemble cast features a fresh lineup of Aussie talent, including Jane Larkin (Boy Swallows Universe), Ryan Wahanga (Young Rock), Rijen Laine (Tidelands, In Our Blood), Mitch Marion (In Our Blood, Drag Race UK), Cynthia Taylu (Love Island), and UK import Kriss Dillon (Eat, Love, London).
FILMED IN BRISBANE
With a boom in the running scene not only in Brisbane, but worldwide, RUN CLUB premieres at a pivotal moment:
“Even in the short time we’ve taken to produce the show, there’s been a rise in running-related humour as the sport becomes more mainstream.”
And while Sydney was recently crowned one of the world’s most aesthetic running destinations, Brisbane holds its own. RUN CLUB delivers next-level visuals thanks to director Grace and her long-time collaborator, multi-ACS award-winning Director of Photography Kevin Khang, who also hails from South East Queensland.
“From stunning sunrises above sparkling water to tropical palms in front of multimillion-dollar apartment blocks, filming the series in Queensland helped us lean into the perfectly ‘curated’ aesthetic we were going for creatively,” says Grace.
SHORT-FORM, BIG AMBITIONS
Inspired by female-led dark comedy creators Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney (Deadloch), the creators are aiming high: “We like to call it ‘Netflix for social’. With more people turning to their phones for entertainment over their TVs, we firmly believe that short-form content with premium production values is the next big thing. Watch out, Stan… we’re coming for you next.”
