After a successful beta, the platform opens to actors nationwide with free casting calls and seven free credits
Will Roberts, the actor who played General George C. Marshall in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, today launched HowToSelfTape.com, an online studio that gives actors everything they need to make a professional self-tape, plus free access to hundreds of casting calls nationwide.
Since the pandemic, the self-tape has replaced the audition room. Actors in Los Angeles and New York now get more taped auditions than in-person ones, and for actors in growing markets like Atlanta, Boston, Houston, Cleveland and Seattle, nearly every audition is a self-tape. Actors have become their own director, lighting crew and sound team, often with sides arriving late at night and a deadline the next morning.
“Actors don’t always have a reader, a coach or the time to memorize,” said Roberts, a 40-year industry veteran, acting coach and author of Self Tape Hacks. “I built HowToSelfTape so any actor, anywhere, can turn in a tape that holds up next to the best in the room.”
Built by an actor, for actors. HowToSelfTape includes:
- An actor’s teleprompter and AI reader. Actors record their scene partner’s lines with their own timing and inflection, then change the voice’s gender and accent at the touch of a button.
- Self-tape feedback. AI trained on hundreds of self-tapes reviews an actor’s take and suggests what to fix.
- Script analysis to break down beats and choices.
- A monologue coach and generator.
- Headshot review covering lighting, framing and professional polish.
- A slate maker for clean, professional slates.
- Calm, a meditation and focus space for a high-pressure career.
- Free casting calls: hundreds of auditions in and outside the traditional hubs, free to browse and submit.
Pricing. New users get seven free credits to try the tools. After that, membership is $19.99 a month and includes a free 30-minute one-on-one consultation every month. Extra credits are $5 for three. Casting calls stay free.
