With the NSW premiere screening of Western Australian documentary SUNLIGHT: YES, the 3rd Inner West Film Fest saw an opportunity to ask topical questions around the use of technology in filmmaking, and in our world in general.

“We’ve all read and watched sci-fi, which certainly doesn’t point to a happy marriage with technology,” says Inner West Film Fest director Dov Kornits. “But! What if it can be used for good?”

Sunlight: Yes is Kenta McGrath & Joseph London’s eye-opening hour documentary following Australia’s pioneering bio-artists, SymbioticA and their latest experiment, 3SDC. After managing to grow the world’s first-ever piece of meat in a laboratory, SymbioticA now want to sprout vegetables, but without sunlight and manure. Can they achieve it, will they get the funding to make it happen? All narrated by AI, AMY.

The underfunded arts leading the way, who would have thunk it!

Screening alongside SUNLIGHT: YES is an extended excerpt from immersive documentary Spirit of the Hoey by UTS’ Dr Gregory Ferris and Dr Liz Giuffre, about iconic Sydney music venue, Hopetoun Hotel; and the first 5 minutes of Jack Manning Bancroft’s animation IMAGINE by Vizion Studios, both created using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.

Following the screening, Vizion’s Mark Grentell and Dr Gregory Ferris and Dr Liz Giuffre will discuss whether Technology Can Be Your Friend with Dov Kornits.

The SUNLIGHT: YES screening will take place at 6.30pm on Monday, 14 April at Dendy Newtown. Tickets available here: https://www.innerwestfilmfest.com.au/2025-program/sunlightyes
