The appointment of Josh in July 2021 came at a time of significant growth for Film Fantastic, as along with delivering the Gold Coast Film Festival for 19 years, the organisation had just acquired the rights for the long-running Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF).
Josh quickly made his mark, leading a team to successfully deliver two BIFFs and two GCFFs along with additional activations partnering with NETFLIX for the World Premiere of TRUE SPIRIT and Story Bridge Films with the Australian Premiere of THE PORTABLE DOOR.
On reflection of his time at Film Fantastic, Josh says “I’m proud to have led the organisation through such a period of growth, assembling a talented team, and delivering four exceptional festivals across two different cities.
“A highlight has been establishing strong festival partnerships with strategic funding bodies, sponsors, distributors and media across both Brisbane and the Gold Coast, as South East Queensland is fast becoming Australia’s favourite screen destination.”
Film Fantastic Board member since July 2019 and Board Chair since June 2022, Luke Wheatley will step down from the Board and act as Interim CEO to deliver the upcoming BIFF this October while the Board determines a long-term direction.
A filmmaker who chases his curiosity, Luke believes that films are a way to make change and create an emotional connection to an audience. He created THE 48 HOUR DESTINATION as the Series Producer whilst writing and directing multiple episodes. Recently he directed and executive produced the large screen format feature documentary BEYOND THE REEF, PLANT DELICIOUS and GROUNDED. He is currently in production of his next feature documentary, is Executive Producer of a scripted horror and is Producer of three-part documentary series.
“Our entire Board would like to thank Josh for the tremendous leadership he has shown over the last two years as CEO.” Luke Wheatley says.
“He leaves the company in a fantastic place and we are excited to keep building on this momentum as we head to the next BIFF and GCFF,” he adds.
Film Fantastic Board member since 2018 and President of Village Roadshow Studios, Lynne Benzie, has been appointed to the role of Chair, having served as the Deputy Chair for the last 12 months. Lynne brings a wealth of industry experience to the role.
Chair Lynne Benzie said “The board thank Josh for the past two years and we look forward to working with Luke as he takes on the role delivering BIFF in October placing a spotlight on the burgeoning film industry in SEQ.”
The Deputy Chair role will be filled by Renee Fry who joined the board in 2022 and is an experienced marketing and communications professional with a passion for film.
The 29th Brisbane International Film Festival will be held October 26 to November 5, 2023, with planning already underway for the 22nd celebration year of the Gold Coast Film Festival in April 2024.
