On September 27th, 2024, the Australian Film Diversity and Inclusion Foundation (AFDIF) hosted its highly anticipated AFDIF Film Festival at Wallis Cinema, Mitcham, where the event brought together an inspiring mix of filmmakers, audiences, and advocates from diverse backgrounds. The festival celebrated the power of film in fostering cultural diversity, inclusion, and elevating the voices of marginalised communities through the big screen.

One of the festival’s highlights was the red carpet, where people from different cultural backgrounds and individuals living with disabilities made a grand entrance, truly embodying the festival’s spirit of inclusion and unity. The audience was not only treated to an evening of cinematic excellence but also witnessed the strong representation of multiculturalism and disability advocacy. Yogi Devgan, founder and director, welcomes members of the African Communities Council of South Australia and Vishva Hindu Parishad of South Australia to the list of partners and supporters.

Throughout the night, short films, music videos, and documentaries were showcased, with awards given to recognise outstanding contributions to storytelling that challenged perceptions and showcased real human experiences. The Audience Award, a new addition, allowed attendees to participate in deciding the best films via a QR code voting system, emphasising the festival’s commitment to transparency and community engagement.

AFDIF’s dedication to supporting emerging filmmakers from underrepresented groups was clearly demonstrated through the diverse selection of films focused on issues such as cultural identitydisability rights, and social change. As a young not-for-profit organisation, AFDIF continues to provide a platform for filmmakers to share their stories and offer their unique perspectives.
