SHAYDA follows a brave Iranian mother who finds refuge in an Australian’s women’s shelter with her six-year-old daughter, Mona. Over the Persian New Year, they take solace in Nowruz rituals and new beginnings, but when her estranged husband re-enters their lives, Shayda’s path to freedom is jeopardised.
Premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and winning the Audience Award, and more recently taking out Australia’s richest film prize at CinefestOZ, SHAYDA stars Iranian French actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi (Holy Spider) alongside Osamah Sami, Leah Purcell, Jillian Nguyen, Mojean Aria and newcomer Selina Zahednia and is inspired by writer director Noora Niasari’s personal experience inside an Australian women’s shelter living alongside other women and children seeking a life without fear.
