The latest trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 – previously Dead Men Tell No Tales, now Salazar’s Revenge in some territories, so we’ll just stick with P5 for now – sees Johnny Depp chucked into the electronic de-agifying machine for a flashback sequence demonstrating why Javier Bardem’s titular villain hates him so much (“He’s annoying AF” not being enough to sustain a whole movie, it seems).
Still, those ghost sharks are pretty cool, and the goofy innocence that Brenton Thwaites brings to the role of Guy Along for the Ride is quite charming – hopefully he’ll leave more of a mark than the last fella. And yeah, while we might be feeling a bit of pirate fatigue – nobody could have guessed, back in the day, that we’d get five movies based on a bloody theme park ride – the swashbuckling iconography and that stirring Zimmer score certainly are hard to resist. So, at this stage we’ll plump for “cautiously intrigued” rather than, “Holy heck, another one?”, which is a step in the right direction.
Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and starring Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Kevin R. McNally, and Geoffrey Rush, Pirates 5 sails into cinemas on May 25, 2017.
