Recovering Donnie Darko Jake Gyllenhaal is currently negotiating to play the villainous Mysterio in Sony/Marvel’s upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. According to The Hollywood Reporter Gyllenhaal is earmarked to play Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio, a special effects expert turned criminal who utilises elaborate illusions in the commission of his crimes.

Compounding this incredibly good news (Gyllenhaal is pretty great is almost everything he does, Life excepted), Variety is reporting that Michael Keaton is returning as The Vulture. Whether the Vulture is still a villain or, as the coda to Homecoming suggested, now positioned to protect Spidey from more rapacious villains is up for conjecture. Knowing the internet, lots and lots of pointless, circular conjecture.

Also comfirmed to be returning are Tom Holland (Spoiler? God knows anymore) as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Zendaya as MJ, and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, with Jon Watts once again directing. The only thing gives us pause is the Spider-Man franchise’s historical record for screwing things up by adding too many villains too quickly. Still, third time;s the charm, right?
