Iman Vellani Cast As Ms. Marvel!

October 2, 2020
Iman Vellani? Who? That’s right, Marvel Studios has opted for a total cleanskin to play one of its most important contemporary superheroes, Ms. Marvel.

Marvel Studios has never been afraid to roll the dice when it comes to their casting choices, studiously avoiding major movie stars (Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t exactly a sure box office bet when he was cast as Tony Stark, even if it might look like it now) in favour of picking the right person for the role. Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Brie Larson, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Rudd…let’s face it, none of these performers are in the same money-spinning league as, say, Dwayne Johnson or Tom Cruise, but they are now all big stars, and they all represent perfect casting.

Marvel Studios has now taken an even bigger gamble, casting 18-year-old Canadian actress Iman Vellani – who has not one single credit to her name – to play teenage Pakistani-American superhero, Ms. Marvel nee Kamala Khan. The character is a huge fan favourite on the page, and is likely to play a major part in The Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward, with the “superhero fan-girl” even firming as an astute substitute for Tom Holland’s youthful Peter Parker if Sony ever decides to double down and pull him from the MCU. “You will meet her in her Disney+ series, and then you will see her in our films,” Marvel Studios main man Kevin Feige confirmed of Ms. Marvel in 2019.
