Australian thriller Hounds of Love has handily picked up Best Feature at the inaugural Overlook Film Festival.

WA director Ben Young’s kidnapping thriller was selected by a jury consisting of Indiewire’s Eric Kohn, Fandango’s Alicia Malone, and Sam Zimmerman of Shudder, who said, “Hounds of Love blew us away with its brilliant combination of gripping horror conventions and kitchen sink realism. Rich with tense performances and complex insight into working class struggles, it’s all the more impressive because it’s a first feature. We’re going to be talking about the movie – and this filmmaker – for a long time.”

The Overlook Film Festival is a horror-specialist event that takes place at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon, which famously stood in for the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. This year Australian films Boys in the Trees and Killing Ground also screened – certainly a strong showing for antipodean genre cinemas.

Hounds of Love opens in Australian cinemas on June 1, 2017.
