Well, there you have it. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a 10 part series that follows three Gelfing heroes who go on a dangerous quest after discovering the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power. That’s a lot of jargon, but it seems that, even though it underperformed on initial release, absolutely everyone saw The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson’s epic, all-puppet fantasy film on VHS, DVD, Blu Ray, and those revival screenings where Gen-Xers gather to stave off that creeping feeling that age shall, indeed, weary them. Heck, you can watch it on Netflix right now if you somehow missed out.
So, that’s the good news! What’s the bad news? Well, it’s a prequel (ugh), and and it’s being created under the aegis of French director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans), who is more miss than hit. Countering that, the Jim Henson Company are producing, and writing duties are being handled by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach.
Still, let’s accentuate the positive! they’ve been trying to milk more out of the world of The Dark Crystal for some time – the Spierigs were attached at one point, and there are comics and whatnot out there if you care to look. Hopefully this will land on the “respectful continuation” side of the line, and not in “gross exploitation” country.
No word of a release date as yet, but the real important question is this: is Brian Froud involved?
