Hammer Time

The ubiquitous Armie Hammer got the acting masterclass he was after with Final Portrait.

“I was playing a character, while slightly introverted, he was also a voyeur who really just wanted to watch and study this man, who was fascinated by him. And I am not lying, I was fascinated by Geoffrey Rush so I was just sitting there, watching him do the scenes, becoming Giacometti.”

In Final Portrait, Armie Hammer poses for Geoffrey Rush’s Alberto Giacometti. For many years, Rush had committed himself to play the famous painter in Stanley Tucci’s long in gestation directing passion project.

“I don’t know that I actually would have the patience to do it especially after seeing how arduous the process is,” says Hammer when asked if he’s ever sat for a portrait in real life. “That being said if there’s an artist like Giacometti nowadays who would ask to paint a portrait I don’t think anybody would say no.”

The parallels with acting are not lost on us, or Hammer. Breaking through with 2010’s The Social Network (David Fincher), the 31-year-old actor has since worked on The Lone Ranger (Gore Verbinski), The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (Guy Ritchie) and has the unanimously well reviewed Call Me By Your Name (Luca Guadagnino) coming out later this year.

“I am just following the really good filmmakers with very good content,” he says about his run of luck. “A lot of great content being made now is for television or independent movies because a lot studio movies within their systems are involved in making one or two, three movies a year. I am not in an Avengers movie, I am not going do a movie with that studio because that’s all they are doing right now, so you’re just going for the good work.”

Final Portrait is in cinemas now.
