Film Studio Opens in Byron Bay

October 4, 2020
With production on the boil just up the road, beyond the Queensland border, Northern Rivers now has its own production hub with the opening of Byron Studios.

Famously home to Chris Hemsworth and family, among other notables both in front and behind the camera, and now an announcement that the four years in development, Byron Studios has opened for business.

Byron Bay is currently hosting productions of Netflix series Nine Perfect Strangers, based on Australian Liane Moriarty’s (Big Little Lies) novel, produced and starring Nicole Kidman; and Stan’s Eden from the producers of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and Skins. Apart from Byron Studios, another studio is in the planning stages in the area.

“I moved here four years ago, and it seems like every couple of weeks I get an email from film crew mates who ask – ‘I am thinking of coming up,’” says Greg Apps, a casting agent who is one of the people behind the initiative.

“So many productions went into hiatus because of Covid. Producers worldwide are scrambling to keep their finance and cast in place. But it is not simply ‘find a studio somewhere in the world!’ It has to be a place where an A list actor feels safe and is happy to come and shoot. The Northern Rivers of NSW is it.”

According to a press release, the studio spaces are shoot ready, with “four areas totalling nearly 2000 sq m of studio space. Projects have already taken advantage of our green screen facility with short and long term bookings… Byron Studios offers a wide range of expertise and facilities including sound stages ranging from 150 to 800sqm, a Green Screen Stage, production offices, edit suites, screening theatre, workshop, warehouses, equipment hire as well as world class post production services (eg. Cumulus VFX and Elements Post Production).”

Furthermore, construction is already planned for “a brand new, purpose built, multi million dollar world class studio complex to commence shortly to open in 2023.”

“We are planning a facility to serve the local community,” says Apps. “In all forms of the arts – dance, music, fashion – but specifically film.

“I was one of the first tenants in Fox Studios. It became the creative heart of Sydney screen production. This facility will do the same for the Northern Rivers.”
