Making its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival is Emo the Musical, writer/director Neil Triffett’s expansion of his 2014 short. It’s a Romeo and Juliet riff that sees emo-rocker Ethan (Benson Jack Anthony) and Christian good girl Trinity (Jordan Hare) falling in love against the backdrop of a high school band competition. Given the emo theme, there may actually be a climactic suicide! Or at lest some poetry and light cutting.

We kid. Seriously, this looks like fun. We might be a little too late for a really on-point satire of the emo scene, which maxed out its cultural cache a few years back, but people still laugh at Spinal Tap, so whatevs.

Emo The Musical premieres on August 12, at the Forum Theatre, as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. For tickets and session times, hit up the MIFF official site.
